Pilgrims who arrive at Madinah airport often visit the Prophet's Mosque first, then travel to Makkah to begin Umrah. The drive south from Madinah to Makkah covers about 450 kilometres along the Hijra highway and takes roughly four and a half hours in normal traffic, plus whatever time you need at the miqat if you're beginning ihram there. Many pilgrims visit the Prophet's Mosque first before continuing to Makkah to perform Umrah, making this one of the most requested long-distance routes in the Kingdom.

There are no tolls on this route, and the fixed price agreed before you travel covers the full journey including the miqat stop. Traffic building near Makkah itself, particularly around prayer times and during Ramadan or peak Umrah season, is the main factor that can extend the drive beyond the usual four and a half hours.

If you haven't yet entered ihram, tell your driver when booking, not on the day — this lets us plan enough time at Dhul Hulaifah (Abyar Ali), just outside Madinah, for you to change, perform the required prayer, and set your intention before continuing. Groups travelling together are collected as one from their Madinah hotel so nobody is left waiting at the miqat while others finish preparing.

Once ihram is confirmed, the remainder of the drive continues south along the Hijra highway to Makkah. A standard sedan comfortably suits solo travellers and couples, while families and small groups usually prefer a larger SUV or van for the four-and-a-half-hour drive plus the miqat stop.
